London Borough of Camden

Camden Adult Community Learning (CACL) sits within the Education and Inclusion Directorate of the London Borough of Camden and is closely integrated into council services through direct local authority investment. Other than the council, the service is commissioned by the GLA under its ASF stream to deliver mostly Entry Level and non-accredited courses. 

CACL has a strong grassroots model: it operates without dedicated training centres.

Delivery is entirely through outreach and partnership and each year, the service supports more than 2000 adults through a curriculum and advice offer shaped by local economic and social need. This is through a range of academic departments including Family Learning, Essential Skills. Community Development, Health and Well Being, a Youth Employment Scheme (Targeting violence reduction) and sub-contracted Vocational courses. It also has a large traded creche.

In addition Camden and Islington ESOL Advice Service, a single point of contact for adults in need of English as a second language learning that is used by the Job Centres and other key agencies as a one stop shop for adults in need of ESOL. It is embedded into refugee settings and Kentish town job centre as well as offering an online Service.

Creating real pathways into work for young people facing complex challenges

For some young people, access to work is not just about skills - it is shaped by complex barriers including trauma, instability and lack of opportunity. Without targeted support, many remain excluded from the workforce.

Trying to find work in a new country without speaking English

For many people arriving in the UK, English language skills are the gateway to employment. Without coordinated support, learners can easily fall between services, delaying or preventing their ability to enter the workforce.

Getting back to work after raising a family

Parents returning to work are a largely untapped part of London’s workforce. Adult learning plays a critical role in unlocking this talent - building confidence, creating realistic pathways and connecting learners directly to local employment opportunities.
