For learners managing long-term health conditions, the first step is often not employment, but rebuilding confidence, identity and a sense of stability.
As one learner, Francesca Bryan, describes:
“When I first joined Idea Store Learning, I was new to the area and didn’t know many people who shared similar interests. At the same time, I was transitioning into part-time work so I could better manage my health condition, MS, which had been affecting both my physical and mental wellbeing. I was looking for a space where I could connect with others, focus on something creative, and rebuild my confidence – and ISL became that place for me.”
Francesca’s experience reflects a wider pattern. Many learners move from feeling isolated and uncertain about their future to feeling more connected, confident and creatively fulfilled. Rebuilding a sense of identity beyond a health condition or previous career is a critical part of that journey.
“My early career was in finance, but after my health began to decline, I found it increasingly difficult to keep up with the fast-paced environment… I made the decision to return to studying and follow my long-standing passion for interior design and architecture.”
Creative learning provides a calm, structured environment where learners can focus on creativity rather than illness, reducing stress and supporting mental wellbeing. It also creates a sense of progression and achievement, helping learners rebuild confidence in what they can do.
“Both courses have opened new creative pathways for me and helped me develop skills I never imagined I would gain.”
Social connection is equally important. Regular interaction with peers helps reduce isolation and creates a sense of belonging.

London Borough of Tower Hamlets
Idea Store Learning serves as the Adult Learning Service for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets Council. It delivers courses across five Idea Stores, a main Learning Centre, and 15 outreach venues.

- A broad programme of community learning supports mental health and wellbeing, offering subjects such as creative and performing arts, languages and health & fitness
