For many new arrivals, the first barrier to employment is not motivation, but language, confidence and understanding how to navigate opportunities.
Henadzi arrived in the UK as a refugee and initially faced uncertainty about his future, alongside limited English and confidence.
He began with Community Learning English courses at Westminster Adult Education Service, where he started to build basic language skills in a supportive environment. As his confidence grew, he progressed into more formal ESOL provision, strengthening his communication and ability to engage more independently.
This early stage was supported by active participation. Henadzi became a committed learner and volunteered to support others in his community, helping to build confidence and social connection.
From there, his learning expanded into vocational areas. He completed Level 1 Bookkeeping and Payroll courses, developing practical skills and gaining experience of structured learning in different subject areas.
Recognising the growing importance of sustainability and practical skills, he also joined the Green Live Learning Lab, where he developed an understanding of climate action and local environmental projects.
This combination of:
- language development
- vocational learning
- community engagement
- exposure to emerging sectors
created a pathway into employment.
Henadzi is now working in gardening, with his employer recognising the value of his participation in the Green Live Learning Lab as a sign of his commitment and capability.
The impact extends beyond employment. Through this journey, he has built confidence, developed new skills and established a sense of belonging within his community.
This case highlights how adult learning supports progression over time. By offering connected opportunities across language, skills and practical experience, it enables individuals to move from initial engagement through to employment in a way that is flexible and responsive to their needs.
